About OSAWEC (Online Support for Academic Writing for the Engineering Curriculum)
This website was developed as part of the language enhancement and language learning collaborative projects commissioned by University Grants Committee (UGC) of Hong Kong in the 2012-2015 triennium. The collaborative institutions are City University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic university and the University of Hong Kong.
The OSAWEC project aims to develop online support for the academic writing of postgraduate Engineering students and empower them to meet the specific requirements of their discipline. This website provides comprehensive explanations of Purpose, Structure and Language Use in the writing of research proposals, theses and publications for Engineering. Interactive Activities are provided for users to consolidate their understanding of the materials and Writing Tips and Common Errors taken from Hong Kong students’ work are included to develop awareness among second language learners of their problems in academic writing. Authentic examples from related academic genres are referred to for illustration and pedagogical purposes. The website materials are useful for enhancing the understanding of language teachers and discipline teachers in academic writing in the Engineering discipline.
